Extra Listening: Chichen Itza

Why did the Maya abandon their magnificent city of Chichen Itza?

Listen to the video on the National Geographic: Chichen Itza Discover why the ancient Maya of Mexico suddenly disappeared leaving nothing but there amazing monuments and terrifying tales of human sacrifice behind.

Make key word notes on the most important points.

Who? Where? When? What? and Why?

Make 5 summarising sentences.

Mexico is a developed country and is able to make millions from tourism to special sites like Chichen Itza. However, to protect and keep these sites is still expensie for the national government. Also, the huge number of tourists can damage the site, cuasing some of the special history to be lost forever.

Do you think we should preserve historical momument? Why? Why not?
Should histroical sites be exploited like this to make extra money for the country? Why? Why not?
Should the numbers of the tourists be limited?

  1. I think everyone has responsibility to protect historical monument. Because it is the great cultural heritage for everyone, so that we should preserve it for descendant, and also we can learn about the ancient culture and custom from it.

In addition, I do not consider that historical sites should be exploited to earn money for the country. Because in several countries which include Mexico, even though exploiters are archaeologists, they do not know how to remain the original appearance. Also some countries and businesses only know to make profit from historical sites, but they are not aware of protecting them. Thus, the government should use some effective methods to preserve them, but it is not a good way that the numbers of the tourists is limited, due to it will decrease the development of tourism.

  2. Maya people developed a system of paragraphic writting. Pyramid was the most famouse building in that time. They also built a great city named Chichen Itza, the city takes part of name from large well. Spanish killed many Maya people. The Maya also developed a 365 day calendar by watching stars. In the era, wokers had to build Pyramid before dedline, otherwise they would sacrifice.

I think the historical sites was living places of people in that period of time. It can present a real history. I support modern people to learn history though seeing old sites. But, if these sites lost, they lost forever. So on the other hand, government preserve them against damage. There are some measures like limiting the numbers of tourists. There should be a sense of balance, and it is the responsible actions government should perform.
