Discussion Question 6: Immigration and Europe

This house believes that immigration is endangering European society

Millions of people from all over the world enter Europe every year for a variety of reasons; ranging from educational and financial to seeking protection from a violent and oppressive regime in their home country.

What affect will this continuous immigration have on Europe? How will it affect the countries' economies, infrastructure, such as health care and education, and society?

With countries like Britain, France and Germany taking on many of the immigrants; how will immigration affect the E.U?

The last week and this week we have been discussing the importance of facts and using them to support our arguments. Look at the debate in the Economist.

You must reference at least of the article listed in the background reading in your comment. Any comment that does not reference an article and explain how that quote supports their argument, will be deleted.

  3. Immigration get a closer relations with the Europe, it spreads British culture, make a significant impact on political, economic, cultural, religious and diplomatic of Europe.Besides, it can promote the economic and make connection with economic development. But sometimes too much immigration may bring some dangerous factors to countries.
Last week, there are some riots in British, especially in big cities such as London and Birmingham, we can not ignore that one of the factors are immigration.
Therefore, sometimes immigration is endangering to European society.

  6. I agree with Vivian. I think that immigration is endangering European society. If there is a lot of immigration, the population will be increasing largely. This may cause business competition pressure, and then many people should loss their jobs. Economic migrants will increase the gap between rich and poor. It will become a social unrest element. The each national culture is different. So if many different races live in a country, it will produce the cultural conflict, such as the London Riots. So the country should limit the immigration.

  8. Both things have their advantages and disadvantages, so immigration is.In fact, immigration has bring some problems to European society. However,it also earn some profits for Europe. The balance is depends on the strategies of government.

"Accounting for a reasonable speed of adjustment of physical capital we show that most of the wage effects of immigration accrue to native workers within a decade. These two facts imply a positive and significant effect of the 1990-2004 immigration on the average wage of U.S.-born workers overall, both in the short run and in the long run. This positive effect results from averaging a positive effect on wages of U.S.-born workers with at least a high school degree and a small negative effect on wages of U.S.-born workers with no high school degree."

  9. The evidence can be seen that immigration has its advantages and disadvantages. It also can be seen that to contrast to the negative affects, the workers of immigrants is valuable.

Otherwise, there are some people choice the illegel way to immigrate. Most of them are unskilled. How can government control it?

  10. Immigration is always argument topic.

Some people think immigration can the business competition pressure and distance between rich and poor.Besides, immigration cause discrimiation and endanger native culture.

Other people think the immigration can increase investment and give a chance culture communication.

Totally, for the European, immigration is good for the development, it can promote European cooperation.

  14. Actually, this issue of immigration is a double-edged sword, because immigration can bring a lot of labour force and overseas investment to promote the European economy, but it also can endanger the native culture, increase the competition of jobs and broke the balance of society, in addition, it can rapidly increase the distance of poor and rich between developing countries and developed countries. Overall, in my opinion, the disadvantages of immigration exceed the advantages.

“Britain and other rich countries that depend heavily on foreign labour would be in a dreadful state. But one prediction he made was spot on: that by about now, one in ten people in Britain would be migrants. And indeed, at the last count in 2005, the foreign-born made up 9.7% of the British population.” Stated by The Economist, January 3rd 2008. It indicates that migrants’ born rate has increased quickly and they become a main part of the British population gradually. Also, it is a bad state that majority of rich countries trend to employ the foreign labour. All of these evidences seem to be strong that the immigration can erode the European native culture and damage the balance of employment and society.

Therefore, it could be concluded that there are many drawbacks about immigration, especially for the native culture and society. So it endangers the European society.

  18. I have different points from Manman's. I can't deny that immigration did make some nedative effects, but objects have two sides of attribute. We judge one object's according to both sides and identify it whether its benefits is more or not.So we can't determine that just because of several individual cases.

Migrants can bring economic dynamism and new ideas and help create new jobs. Migrants also help fill gaps in the labour market that EU workers cannot, or do not wish to fill, and contribute to addressing the demographic challenges that the EU faces. To give some examples, the Commission's Agenda for new skills
and jobs estimates that by 2020 there will be a shortage of about one million professionals in
the health sector - and up to two million taking into account also ancillary healthcare
professions. The EU also requires a very large increase in the number of researchers active here, some of who will need to come from third countries, if the economy is to become as dynamic and innovative as is necessary to remain competitive in a global economy.

  19. "Proposing our motion, David Goodhart boldly links the two themes, suggesting that the absence of low-skilled jobs for British youngsters—attributable in part to immigration, he thinks—is one of the explanations for the riots".stated by Andrew Miller, Aug 12th 2011

There is an example to support this quote:Last week, there are some riots in British, especially in big cities such as London and Birmingham, we can not ignore that one of the factors are immigration.

  20. "Immigration must be halted in the short-term so that our dole queues are not added to by, in many cases, unskilled migrants not fluent in the English language."
    Stated by Pauline Hanson, 2007

The evidence can be seen that the immigration has the bad effect for the country and the society, especially the economic and the social welfare. So that the immigration policies need to be redone, which limit the number of immigrants.

  21. Immigration can add high-quality labor force and productivity improvement and local economic development has a positive role in promoting social development and progress of differentiation
Foreign immigrants, many are intellectuals, they moved to bring different cultures, not only the formation of a culture, but also promote the development of local education, opened up people's vision. Promote the culture of each country's integration. Between the peoples of the world ,to strengthen mutual understanding and strengthen international exchanges and cooperation.

“America was indebted to immigration for her settlement and prosperity. That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts. ”James Madison,2003.In other words,European countries continue to adjust immigration policy, immigrants are now more and more difficult, so most of the immigrants are highly skilled workforce of immigrants, but also in the handicraft industry, agriculture, etc. to bring new production technologies

  22. I disagree with the point that immigration is endangering European society is endangering European society. I believe that immigration can bring much more benefits for a country. Immigrants not only can give a nation bring economic development, but also can give a nation bring new science and technology. More and more immigrants will make national becoming economic globalization.

  23. I disagree this point. If countries accept immigration to the country's economy has a lot of push, many countries in order to make the foreign businessman to national investment, lowered the immigration policy, this is very good, and Can introduce foreign talents Make the country more development.

  24. I think everythung has it two sides. The immigration will help a person to live in a better ecvironment. He will be more comfortable or richer. Their family will be much better than before. But the immigration will also cause the cultures of their own contuntries loss. Their languages or history. Or it will cause the population problems.

In recent years, immigration has accounted for more than half of Norway's population growth. In 2006, Statistics Norway's (SSB) counted a record 45,800 immigrants arriving in Norway—30% higher than 2005. At the beginning of 2007, there were 415,300 persons in Norway with an immigrant background (i.e. immigrants, or born of immigrant parents), comprising 8.3 percent of the total population.

  25. I couldn't agree with that immigration is endangering European society.

Some people think that social unrest is caused by immigration. In each given examples, there was an underlying reason for the turmoil and simultaneously the immigrants are more sensitive to contradiction than aborigine. Immigration issue was usually used to divert public's attention from the essential issues.

In France, Nicolas Sarkozy won the presidential elections partly thanks to his anti-migrant rhetoric. The game of election is to find a best reason for different current issues and express a strong determination and confidence to solve it. Unfortunately, immigration is a reasonable and acceptable reason to put the blame on.

"Despite a growing backlash, the boom in migration has been mostly good for both sending and recipient countries", stated by Adam Roberts, Jan 3rd 2008, on The Economist.

Every country has its absolutely advantages and comparative advantage in producing goods and services. Developed countries own the advanced technology, equipments and management experience. Developing countries could provide cheap labour and cheap row material.
According the economic theory, only the cooperation could lead to a mutual beneficial situation.

  26. Everything have two sides that positive and negative. So the immigration also have this situation. The immigration improve the population and increase the labour in the European social. In the other hand, also led to the European social chaos and environmental pollution.

The current age structure of Britain is a result of the rapid growth of the population over the past 100 years, from about 30m to a bit over 60m. To keep that age structure as it now is would require another surge of population growth. But that is not a popular policy, especially in our more green-minded, congestion-conscious times, so we must get used to growing a bit older gracefully.

In most European countries, recent inflows have been much smaller. According to the OECD, net inflows to Britain over 2005-09 averaged 42 newcomers a year per 10,000 residents—0.42%. In France the rate was 0.21% and Germany 0.07%. Man the barricades: we're being swamped!
