Discussion Question 7: Ancient Issues of Prostitution

It is the oldest profession in the world. However, there is more than one problem surrounding prostitution. Drugs, human traffiking, exploitation; these are just some of the issues that we associate with prostitution. In England alone there is at two or three famous cases where prostitutes have been murdered by serial killers.

Many countries have made it illegal. It is still there, in a secret underground black market. Prostitution will not diappear. Whether it is right or wrong does not matter.

The question this week is simple: how does society accommodate it so there is the least harm to everyone involved?

Consider case studies from at least two different countries and how they have controlled the issue. Read the BBC article and use some links to find EVIDENCE (quote and reference carefully using REPORTING VERBS).

  1. There has been a dilemma of legalising prostitution or struggling with uncontrollable underground trade. Hence this deal can't be solved immediately, legalisation could be an exercisable measure to reduce the harm to the least.

The BBC Newsnight indicated that this phenomenon will last for a long time:“...prostitution it is not going to go away”(Newsnight,06).

So establishing an organisation and supervising this kind of exchange will be beneficial for decreaseing risk of attendant crime.

  2. I think that the prostitutes are the people who just want to live in their lives. They have to work in such a dangerous environment. They have to make contact with the people who live in dark, such as the druggy, vagrant and people are down in spirits. The prostitutes may suffer damage because they are working with these people.

"Prostitutes are often among the most vulnerable members of society, working to fund drug habits or out of desperate poverty. Their trade is also illegal and operating outside of the law leaves them even more vulnerable." Published by NEWSNIGHT,13 Dec 06,2011

The prostitutes were reported to have worked in a dangerous environment. With this reason, the government will manage them and give them the complete production. Firstly, they can manage the women to have a good living environment which will prevent them from the dangerous. After that, they can train the women to learn a skill to support themselves. This will help the women to have better lives in the society.

  3. I think Margaret's point of view may be correct, but I have a different point of this view.
For a long time, prostitutes have been flouted; I think this is a disgusting business; literally, we and they should be ashamed of it. We can not use words to conceal their true nature, but to explore what can and should do. Time is long overdue to make the legal brothels, it is completely reprehensible, and we continue to criminalize prostitution. Has been around since there have been men and women in prostitution. It never stops. Take it away the pimps and criminals; it is the light, enabling organizations to enable women and their customers safe. Women may also be medically checked regularly, so want to prevent the spread of disease, at the same time may help them to stop drug use.

“When prostitution is a crime, the message conveyed is that women who are sexual are “bad” and therefore legitimate victims of sexual assault. Sex becomes a weapon to be used by men.”MARGO ST. JAMES, San Francisco Examiner, Apr. 29, 1979

My suggestion is that we should call these women sex workers; it would threaten the health and disrupt social order. And appeal to them, as I have heard the British Broadcasting Corporation professionals said that today is to belittle the whole concept implies professionalism.

  4. I agree with margaret. The prostitutes only want to get some money to support themselves live in this seciety. They do not have high education. Their family may be poor that can not afford their expendence. They do not have job, and live in low position in the seciety. So prostitutes may affected by criminal and work with undersirable social workers.

"Prostitution is very broad term. It ranges from high class, expensive courtesans to the girls that jump in a car with stranger. Some very easy to control and are exploiting their clients. Some are running very successful businesses that contribute well to the economy. Others are vulnerable and exploited by clients, pimps, drug dealers, and any other lowlife that can get in on the act." Stated by Paul Alker,14 Dec 2006

It can be seen that prostitutes are living in a circumstance with complicate situation. There are lots of dangerous surround of prostitutes. According to this situation, as a member of this seciety, it will be a lot of meatures can be used to protect prostitutes from dangerous. Government can make some policy to help wemen away from dangerous, and give them some job to support them life.

  5. I agree with Margaret point.that the prostitutes are the people who just want to live in their lives.

Sue Bradford, Member of New Zealand's Parliament, in a Dec. 12, 2005 speech to Parliament, said:
"We believed, and still do, that it was completely wrong to go on living with an archaic law which criminalised generations of sex workers, mainly women, for a victimless so called crime in the name of antique moralities shared by only some of the population."

In my opinion, the Prostitutes just be forced by life, but this job is very dangerous.because
this is their's job,They in such an environment.Come into contact with some bad people

  6. I think there is people have demand will have to supply. So about the prostitutes are not good for the social but the demand from the social, then this industry can always exist. Only people not this demand, the industry will disappear entirely.

"Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them." Stated by JERRY FALWELL, Crossfire, May 17, 1997

So this clearly to show that we can refused to this kind of behavior. Then the social will be better.

  7. I agree with Margaret. As we know, not all the Prostitutes do these jobs they like, to mose of them, it is just the way to struggle the lives, they have to live in poor areas, not very safe. Besides, the people also discriminate against prostitutes, so sometimes they are living in a critical place. It is always dangerous when they face to the criminals.

"The strategy focussed on providing appropriate protection and routes out for those involved in prostitution, protecting communities from the nuisance associated with prostitution, and ensuring that those who control, coerce or abuse prostitutes are brought to justice. "published by newsnight, 13 December 2006

The governemnt should make out some politices to protect some poor people, take them away from such dangerous situation, besides, we should not ignored the persons who are facing a difficult situation.

  8. I think the women who be a prostitute is not in their mind. They need money but they have not enough abilities to gain a good job.
Punishing the prostitute promotes the rape of all women. When prostitution is a crime, the message conveyed is that women who are sexual are ''bad'', and therefore legitimate victims of sexual assault. Sex becomes a weapon to be used by men.
    Margo St. James
Nowdays, whoring is a necessary part of trade. Many companies' leader treat their customer go to brothels in order to gain a opptortunity in business.
Many governments had made laws try to stop this phenomenon. But the effect is not obvious.

  9. I agree with Margaret. Some girls choose to do the prostitution because they have no other choice. They need money to maintain their life, perhaps for family heal and for the family debts and so on. Their living environment is very bad, which may have relationship with drugs, human trafficking and exploitation. These will bring harm to everyone involved.

JAMES states that when prostitution is a crime, the message conveyed is that women who are sexual are “bad,” and therefore legitimates victims of sexual assault. Sex becomes a weapon to be used by men. (MARGO ST, JAMES, Apr. 29, 1979)

Given this evidence, it can be seen that the prostitution becomes legal that help protect everyone involved. Even if it is recognized for illegal, it will still exist. If prostitution becomes legitimate, government easy will govern it. The government can appoint a special law, which to product the parties and set some restrictions.

  10. I diagree with all of the people above that the prostitution is a job which will lead more crime. Although the prostitution is a job, the people who did these job have the ability to do some regular job.

In my opinion, the government should pay atetion to solve the prostitution problems to decrease the number of the people who did these job to give them some choices to choose another one.

  11. I agree with Allen's opinion, prostitution might mroe crime happend, although prostitutes did that work for make more moeny, but they can did some regular job who have the ability.

“When prostitution is a crime, the message conveyed is that women who are sexual are “bad” and therefore legitimate victims of sexual assault. Sex becomes a weapon to be used by men.”MARGO ST. JAMES, San Francisco Examiner, Apr. 29, 1979

I belive,If the government does not pay attention to this problem to take effective measures, will lead to more crime.

  12. Actually, I think it is a complicated issue to solve by society. W. William Shakespeare (1601 )stated that there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. So, this issue in different countires has different meaning with different approach to deal with by society.

  13. No one has answered the question. What should society i.e. government or social organisation s do to make sure there is the least harm to everyone. Remember I don't care about your opinion about whether prostitution is good or bad.

  14. About the problem of prostitution, I think the policy of the government is not much effected.
Prostitution laws are also a violation of the right of individual privacy because they impose penal sanctions for the private sexual conduct of consenting adults. Whether a person chooses to engage in sexual activity for purposes of recreation, or in exchange for something of value, is a matter of individual choice, not for governmental interference. ProCon.org(Apr. 30, 2007)
Prostitution is private, if ues the legal sanctions work on it, will be in violation of another law. If in order to reduce the damage to everyone, it is based on each person's viewpoint. Some people don't like this kind of activity, they can avoid, but for the people who drugs or do the sex trade, and some special poor women, they will thinkit is valued. This is a personal choice, the law can't interfere it.

  15. Kiran, I think I had answered the question.

  16. You have certainly made an interesting point. I think the problem with this discussion so far Margaret, is that that we are not focusing on the issues of law and HOW to take away the harmful effects.

    http://utopianist.com/2011/03/germany-legalized-prostitution-in-2002-has-it-helped/

This is an example of Germany - where Sex Trade was legalised. It has also been legalised in many other European and in certain states in the USA.

I would be more interested to see what your opinion is on these cases and the specific measures they have taken.

  17. Alexandra Kollontai once spoke in a speech that The factors responsible for prostitution were low wages, social inequalities, the economic dependence of women upon men, and the unhealthy custom by which women expect to be supported in return for sexual favours instead of in return for their labour.
Therefore, society should pay equally for women, treat women equally with men and make efforts to offer some jobs for those homeless or poor women to prevent prostitution. On the other hand, society also should help prositutes raise the political consciousness. To make them realize these actions'impact for the whole society.
That means the government or social organizations should solove this problem from two sides:objective and subjective. One aspect is to develop and complete the policies about women's rights, the other aspect is to improve the prositutes' thinking.

  18. (continue...)
In my opinion, government can make law to decrease the harm at least to relevant people in prostitution.

"In January 2006, the Home Office released a Coordinated Prostitution Strategy to foucus on providing appropriate protection and routes out for those involved in prostitution, protecting communities from the nuisance associated with prostitution, and ensuring that those who control, coerce or abuse prostitutes are brought to justice." Stated by Newsnight, 2006.

"Since 1975 we have been campaigning for the abolition of the prostitution laws which criminalise sex workers and their families, and for economic alternatives and higher benefits and wages so that no woman, child or man is forced by poverty or violence into sex." Stated by Newsnight, 13 December 2006.
The evidences seem to indicate that some governments want to legalise the prostitution to protect people and the right involved in prostitution, and preserve communities' benefit.

Thus, governments or socities can legalise this kind of work to protect people who involved in this situation.
